“Scientists are meant to know what’s going on, but in this particular case, we are deeply confused.”
In this post I'll describe how to sequence a human genome at home, something that's only recently become possible. The protocol described here is not necessarily the best way to do this, but it's what has worked best for me. It costs a few thousand dollars in equipment to get started, but the (low-coverage) sequencing itself requires only $150, a couple of hours of work, and almost no lab skills.
Electrical engineers at the University of California San Diego developed a technology that improves the resolution of an ordinary light microscope so that it can be used to directly observe finer structures and details in living cells.
A new breath mint that rebuilds your tooth enamel while it whitens your teeth has been created by UW Researchers.
The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic introduced the world to a new type of vaccine based on mRNA encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles (LNPs). Instead of delivering antigenic proteins directly, an mRNA-based vaccine relies on the host's cells to manufacture protein immunogens which, in turn, are targets for antibo …
The genetically modified neurons became stand-ins for the photoreceptors he had lost many years before to retinitis pigmentosa.
How many new particles has the LHC discovered? The most widely known discovery is of course that of the Higgs boson. Less well known is the fact that, over the past 10 years, the LHC experiments have also found more than 50 new particles called hadrons. Coincidentally, the number 50 appears in the context of hadrons twice, as 2021 marks the 50th anniversary of hadron colliders: on 27 January 1971, two beams of protons collided for the first time in CERN’s Intersecting Storage Rings accelerator,…

Classed as a 'protease inhibitor', it has been formulated to attack the "spine" of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and stop it replicating in our nose, throats and lungs
With artificial intelligence and painstaking study of sperm whales, scientists hope to understand what these aliens of the deep are talking about.
The population is healthy overall, but a mysterious contagion has researchers looking for answers.
Collaborating with devoted colleagues, Dr. Kariko laid the groundwork for the mRNA vaccines turning the tide of the pandemic.
UC scientists and physicians hope to permanently cure patients of sickle cell disease by using CRISPR-Cas9 to replace a defective gene with the normal version
